The adventures and misadventures of an heirloom gardener

Yesterday, I saw a very distintive little brown bird. He had a black bib. Aha! Surely I would be ble to identify this one. Sure enough, he is a House Sparrow. Although they are supposed to be very common, this is the first one I have seen. All the rest are just little and brown.

:) a male house sparrow. My mom had one for a pet for a while. (Seriously, in a cage. This is because she found him, very young and flightless, on the ground. She picked him up and took him to (? someone) to have him identified (she didn't know what type of bird it was).

he grew up to look like that bird, and he lived to be 16 before he died of a respiratory infection of some kind. But he would sit on her shoulder while she cleaned his cage and dishes, and then when she was done he would splash around in the sink. :)
